See for yourself how competitive search engine optimization (SEO) is. Go to Google and type in any word. Then look up in the right corner of your screen just above the sponsored links. You’ll see a line that reads “1 of 10 of about (your keyword)”. The big number tells you how many web pages use the word that you entered into the Google search box. It will be a big number because there a lot of people talking about the word.
I typed in “tennis in Minneapolis” and got 172 million results. Technically speaking all of those web pages are competitors, but it’s unlikely that all the pages are actually competitors. All the websites are competing for the same top rankings at Google, but they aren’t all competitors in a real sense. For example, some of those web pages are news stories from a year ago; others are web pages for e-commerce sites that sell tennis rackets. If I don’t sell tennis rackets then I am not competing with the sites that do. But a certain percentage of those 172 million pages are vying for the same customers as you. The question is how many of those sites are real competitors?
